Nina Mickwitz is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire and has taught across several schools at the University of East Anglia. She recently completed her PhD, ‘Comics and/as Documentary: the implications of graphic truth-telling’ in the School of Film, Television and Media at UEA. The thesis challenged the persistent assumption that ties documentary to recording technologies, and instead engages an understanding of the category in terms of narrative, performativity and witnessing. It asked how comics, by means of their formal qualities, might offer alternative strategies and even the possibility to overcome certain problems associated with audio-visual modes of documentary representation.
Nina is currently researching documentary web-comics and working on the proposal for a monograph based on her the thesis. She is one of the organisers of Transitions: New Directions in Comics Studies, an annual symposium at Birkbeck College, London.
